I have been a lifetime multiple dog owner starting with many pet dogs as a child.
Sarah was my first birddog during the summer of 1975. Sarah’s mistreatment during a
four week stay with an obedience trainer in 1977 lead me into the world of dog training.
Sarah returned scared and intimidated by being jerked around with a choke collar.
My very first dog training effort was to rehabilitate Sarah. This has lead me on a life
long search to find new and inventive training techniques to make it easier for dogs to learn.
After Sarah's early demise from cancer I obtained puppies from the best Red Setters of
1981 that lead to a decade of serious field trial effort all over the country primarily
with the National Bird Hunters Association trials.
I grew disenchanted with walking trials as the emphasis shifted from
gentleman's shooting dogs to edge running trial dogs. My decision to change careers
brought me back to what I truly enjoy - great gundogs. Sarahsetter Kennels was founded on
very rare principles back in 1991 - to train dogs without the use of punishment by using
behavioral training methods including negative and positive reinforcement.
